To all Milk Bar fans out there: do I have a treat for you!
I’ve always been a huge fan of Momofuku’s Milk Bar. If you’ve never had the chance to taste this sweet goodness, my heart aches for you. From the soft serve, to the cookies, to their renowned birthday cake truffles (my personal favorite), Milk Bar is heaven on earth for anyone with a sweet tooth. While I’ve tried all of the above, I’ve never had the chance to taste their signature birthday cake. Luckily, that all changed when Ben and I went to Milk Bar’s home base in Williamsburg to make the cake for ourselves! It’s called the “Bake the Book” class, where students learn to assemble one of their classic triple layer, 6″ cakes and truffles! They also offer a Crack Pie class as well.
Notice: I carefully chose the word “assemble”. That’s because the Milk Bar team actually bakes the cake that you’ll use to layer your personal cake beforehand. I was a little relieved to know that no actual baking was involved. One: it would have taken hours. Two: I probably would have ruined it (I have a very bad cooking and baking track record.) Three: by using their pre-baked cake, we kept our cakes true to the Milk Bar brand.
This class was AWESOME. It was hands down, one of the funnest things I’ve ever done! Their facility is absolutely beautiful and the pictures don’t do it justice. It’s basically a large warehouse with tons of windows and open space. The Milk Bar instructors were great. They kept the atmosphere light and fun as they guided us through all of the tricky parts, like cutting out the circles and trying to stack the cake evenly. They also made sure we followed by the most important rule of all which, oddly enough, had nothing to do with keeping your phone in your bag or keeping your work space clean. The #1 rule of the class was to make sure we tasted EVERYTHING. Extra cake, icing, sugar decorations, everything. It was amazing!
Classes fill up quickly, so if you’re interested, head on over to Milk Bar’s website and sign up!! If you’re not up to the tasty challenge, head on over to one of Milk Bar’s 9 NYC locations! There are also stores in Washington D.C., Vegas and Toronto. There’s certainly a chance that you don’t live anywhere near any of these locations, but fear not: they deliver anywhere in the United States and Canada (sincerely sorry, everyone else!!!) I definitely suggest buying tickets to the class as a gift! It’s an awesome activity for couples or friends!!
And just in case you New Yorkers needed a visual (but mostly because this map is super cute!):
